for String Quartet and Piano

”… an image of ethereal tranquillity ….”

Lubomyr Melnyk is one of the early innovators of Continuous Music, especially as pianist. In this work from 1992, he has transformed the string quartet into an unbroken stream of patterns and melodies --- the result is a peaceful and tender journey into ethereal landscapes … an acoustic dream of Swallows in the distance ....
where time and space seem to melt away !

This music for String Quartet was originally composed in 1984, along with initial notes for an intended piano part. The completed piano part was added in 1991/92. Portions of this quartet were first performed in 1991 at the Music Conservatory of L'viw in Ukraine .
In February of 1992, a group of four young string players from Ukraine came to Sweden to record -SWALLOWS- with the composer. Over a period of two weeks, a total of 3 recordings of the piano-quartet version were made on three separate occasions. ( An additional recording was made of the "solo" quartet version --without piano -- and is available under the separate title of "St. Francis And The Swallows". )
Each of these recordings has its own beauties, and its own flaws. As these are the first performances of this music, and because their special qualities can never be repeated, Bandura Records has released the digital master in this current "Archive Edition" cd issue.
